Description:

The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) is a part of Natural Resources Canada.
This GSC site offers seven directories:

About the Geological Survey of Canada
What services we Provide *
What Products we Provide *
What Databases we Provide
Current Events
Ask a Geologist *
Menu en francais

These directories contain extensive geological information. You will
find a geological history of Canada, as well as information on rocks, minerals,
gemstones, earthquakes, fossils and meteorites. This site will keep you
up to date on current seminars, courses and meetings pertaining to Geology
in Canada. The latest geological maps of Canada and the world can be
obtained (even on CD-Rom).

Evaluation:

The GSC looks like a place for Geology professionals and those employed
by Natural Resources Canada. There is easy access to numerous pertinent
files. However, even professionals may be frustrated to find files that
only contain fax/phone numbers or addresses. The file on seminars and
courses holds names of contact persons and professors, together with
course outlines.

Two of the files contain excellent data for students and teachers of
middle elementary through grade twelve. The file, 'The Identification
Services (Meteorites/Minerals/Rocks/Fossils) in the directory, 'What Services
We Provide' is fascinating and factual reading. Students and teachers can
discover what meteorites are, where they have been found, where they
come from and what use and importance they have.

Teachers should also like 'The Educational Materials' located in the
directory 'What Products We Offer'. This provides a list of videos,
posters, kits and publications. Descriptions, costs and mailing addresses
are also given. Many of these items are either free or reasonably priced.

As this GSC develops it may prove increasingly useful to both educators and
students. My advice is to keep an eye on this site.
