Purpose:
Betar is a youth movement founded by Vladimir Jabotinsky in 1923. Jabotinsky is also famous as the founder and spiritual leader of Revisionist Zionism. Vladimir Jabotinsky was born in Odessa in 1880, and died in New York in 1940 while working to build up North American Zionism. During his lifetime, he was a journalist, politician, playwright, orator, and visionary. Betar was originally founded as a vehicle for the realization of youth aliyah and a mode of identification with Israel among the youth of the Diaspora. As early as 1930, Betar had chapters on four continents, with rapidly-growing membership. With the establishment of the State of Israel, and the development of the Herut party, Betar became the youth wing of Herut, and provided a drawing ground for future political leaders in Israel. In 1982, students at the University of Albany decided that a more vocal presence was needed on university campuses to combat media and academic misrepresentation of Israel and its policies. Tagar was founded, and has since developed into a university and college continuing-ground for Betar youth. Today, Betar and Tagar are the constituent official youth wings of the Likud party.
